The Forager's Whare

ABOUT THE FORAGER'S WHARE

The Forager's Whare is located in the Eastxeast activity area in the 'redzone' at 399 New Brighton Road. This area in was a well-loved residential area prior to the February 2011 earthquake, makes up a part of the 'redzone', in the Burwood/Avondale. The entire redzone was home to over 7000 people and is mostly located around the Ōtakaro-Avon river corridor area in eastern Ōtautahi-Christchurch. It is in the takiwā of Ngai Tūāhuriri, one of the 18 rūnanga of Ngāi Tahu.

The Forager's Whare is in a spot, which is naturally surrounded by old fruit trees from the prior properties - a huge old pear, a sprawling grape vine, several apple trees, several peach trees, elderberry and more. As part of enhancing the activity in the area and bringing life back into the 'redzone', we are working as volunteers alongside Eastxeast to create an educational and enjoyable spot to learn about fruiting plants and foraging. We hope to develop the area with some planterboxes filled with fruiting shrubs such as berries, herbs, and other perennial edible and medicinal plants.
