It has large to extremely large apples that are crisp, juicy and tart to sweet/tart. It is square-ish in shape, with red stripes on pale green. A versatile apple it can be used for cooking, juicing, cider making or fresh eating when it is tree ripened. The tree is a hardy and disease resistant variety. The Monty's Surprise fruit has been studied by NZ Tree Crops Association (Mark Christensen) and has been found to be extremely high in health-boosting antioxidants.

It dates back to the late 19th century and is an excellent dual-purpose apple. Orange-red in colour, the fruit is large and sweet. It will hold its shape when cooked, so an excellent option for tarts but not good for sauces. Will keep well in cold storage for up to 5 months. A reliable cropper, Charles Ross has medium vigour and is a spur-bearer. An easy-to-grow, backyard apple it is known for its good disease resistance (particularly resistant to scab), and is a good choice for alkaline soils, as it has a higher tolerance to lime than other apple cultivars.
