- ORANGE | Fruitfool
Orange - Citrus X sinensis Go to the Orange varieties New Zealand Orange varieties can be placed in four categories: Common, Navel, Pigmented, and Bitter oranges. Navel oranges have a distinctive ‘Navel’, and tend to be seedless. On the whole they require less heat to attain optimum quality than most other oranges and therefore are good varieties to the cooler climates. They are not great for juicing, both yielding less juice and juice becoming bitter in storage. Common oranges form a large and diverse group, with a wide range of tree-growth and fruit-quality characteristics. Pigmented oranges are often referred to as blood oranges and are the result of anthocyanins. Cara Cara is not a true blood orange, actually more closely related to the Navel orange, and it's pink-red colour is the result of lycopenes rather than anthocyanins. The red pigments (anthocyanins) develop only when there are low night temperatures and it is not until winter that the fruit develops red colour. Sour or bitter oranges are named because their juice is both acidic and bitter. The perfume industry uses sour orange flowers and they are often planted in parks and along streets to show off the abundant fragrant blooms and deep orange fruit. The fruit is often used for marmalade and glacé fruit production. - ROOTSTOCK INFORMATION | Fruitfool
Rootstock Information Almost all apple trees, and many Peach, Nectarine, Plum, Pear, Cherry and Citrus are grafted onto rootstNearly all apple trees sold in New Zealand are grafted or budded onto rootstocks. It's not always clear what the series of letters and numbers or obscure names mean but it can mean the difference between a healthy happy tree in your garden or not. Rootstocks play the main role in determining the eventual size of the tree and how the tree responds to growing conditions such as moisture, soil type and climate. With the exception of very dwarfing rootstocks, the rootstock will not impact the actual size of the fruit produced. Filter by Use Reset Filters Title UsedFor Type Avg. - RASPBERRIES | Fruitfool
Raspberries - Rubus idaeus Go to the Raspberry varieties Raspberries date from pre-Bronze Age where legend has it that when the Greek gods went to Mt. Ida in Turkey they returned with raspberries. The delicate unique flavour, with the fragrant bouquet, still makes raspberries a favourite with fruit lovers today. An excellent fruit for home gardener. They are a top antioxidant food; high in fibre, vitamin C and folate. Best eating is fresh, picking the sweet delicate fruit straight off the canes. Any extra and soft fruit use in jam desserts, smoothies and sauces. Although you can never have too many raspberries especially with children., it is recommended to plant two plants per person. Most varieties fruit in December and January, but some ripen in February and March. Aspiring is a variety that fruits both in spring and autumn and comes highly recommended. They prefer a sunny position, but best not to plant in full afternoon sun, particularly in northern areas. They don't mind a bit of wind but they aren't very salt tolerant. Because they produce suckers, you'll want to plant in an area that you can contain, although if grass surrounds the area you can just 'mow' the young canes and this will stop spread. In some cases they are best grown in containers for this purpose. They do need chilling hours, for fruitset, but if you can grow apples you can grow raspberries. If you're in a wamer, northern area be careful with your choice of variety. They like a rich, organic soil with good drainage. They are hardy to -10°C. - FIG | Fruitfool
Fig - Ficus carica Go to Fig Varieties Figs are considered to be one of the first crops humans cultivated and are prized for their nutrition, flavour and versatility. Growing your own fig tree is still the best way to provide a supply of fruit as they are not widely commercially grown, due to their fragility and poor storage qualities. Figs are wonderful fruit enjoyed fresh, preserved or dried. Although considered a subtropical tree, fig trees are quite hardy during their dormant period over winter, and can tolerate temperatures as low as -10°C (extended periods of low temperatures can cause stem damage). In order for the fruit to ripen, good warm weather during late summer is required. In most areas of New Zealand, any fig variety should generally grow and produce well. If you live in south of Nelson, go for early-ripening varieties, as temperatures later in the season will get too cool for later-ripening types. Fig trees will grow in a range of soil types, including clay, but they hate having wet feet for long periods so free draining is recommended. Poorer soils can sometimes actually be better for figs, as it helps to keep their vigour manageable. They will benefit from a general fruit tree fertiliser and regular watering, especially when the crop is ripening, but otherwise, figs are generally considered easy care and shouldn't require spraying. Figs can be grown in large containers, such as a barrel but use good potting mix and keep them well watered. An added benefit of growing figs in pots is that the trees won't get too big, so you can easily cover them with netting to stop birds getting the crop before you. IIt also allows those in marginal regions (such as Canterbury and Otago), to move the pots into the warmest spot to allow the fruit to fully ripen. Return to: The Forager's Whare ABOUT FORAGING MAP FORAGING ETTIQUETE PLANT INFO CONTACT ABOUT THE FORAGER'S WHARE The Forager's Whare is located in the Eastxeast activity area in the 'redzone' at 399 New Brighton Road. This area in was a well-loved residential area prior to the February 2011 earthquake, makes up a part of the 'redzone', in the Burwood/Avondale. The entire redzone was home to over 7000 people and is mostly located around the Ōtakaro-Avon river corridor area in eastern Ōtautahi-Christchurch. It is in the takiwā of Ngai Tūāhuriri, one of the 18 rūnanga of Ngāi Tahu. The Forager's Whare is in a spot, which is naturally surrounded by old fruit trees from the prior properties - a huge old pear, a sprawling grape vine, several apple trees, several peach trees, elderberry and more. As part of enhancing the activity in the area and bringing life back into the 'redzone', we are working as volunteers alongside Eastxeast to create an educational and enjoyable spot to learn about fruiting plants and foraging. We hope to develop the area with some planterboxes filled with fruiting shrubs such as berries, herbs, and other perennial edible and medicinal plants. Do you want to get involved with this project? Contact us or visit us at our Facebook page. With thanks to our sponsors: Kāpūtahi Community Orchard
- FORAGING ETTIQUETTE | Fruitfool
Return to: The Forager's Whare ABOUT FORAGING MAP FORAGING ETTIQUETE PLANT INFO CONTACT FORAGING ETTIQUETTE There are some basic rules, or ettiquette, that you should follow when foraging in a public space. They aren't laws, but they do rely on people being good humans. 1. Don't damage the trees Don't break branches to get fruit, and don't climb the trees unless you're sure it can handle your weight. 2. Don't leave rubbish This goes for anywhere on the planet, but especially in our green public spaces! 3. Be courteous to others Again with the being a good human.... always be kind and polite to others enjoying the space. Unless they are being anti-social (or breaking rules 1 & 2) there is no need to put on your police(wo)man's hat (even for rule number 4!). 4. Stealing vs Foraging Remember that foraging on private land without permission is not foraging, it's stealing! Stick to public land, or get permission from the private land owner if you wish to forage on their land. 5. Take only a fair share It's okay to take what you, and your whānau will use/eat (making juice/fermentations/bottling is fine too). Don't take what you don't need and think of others. As a general rule, we don't recommend that foraging be used for commercial purposes (i.e selling the fruit). 5. Be sure of what you are gathering before you eat it Fruits are fairly easily identifable and generally pretty safe, but if you are foraging for fungi or herbs be sure you know what it is before you consume it to ensure it is safe. If you are not comfortable with plant identification, we recommend going with an experienced forager, or perhaps join in some of our workshops/working bees to learn alongside all of us. 6.Can you offer the trees something in return Because the trees are not actively being managed by CCC (only the grass/weeds), they are not getting pruned/fertilised/mulched or generally looked after. Is there a local or favourite tree that you might have the ability to adopt and look after? Would you like to get involved in our working bees? Contact us via our contact details or Facebook page if you'd like to know more about how to get involved. 7. Have fun Enjoy being out in our beautiful nature, enjoy the space and the exploration. We hope you find many treasures of ripe fruit, herbs, fungi and more. It's a great learning experience for our tamariki too, so be sure to include them if you can.

- PLANT INFORMATION | Fruitfool
Return to: The Forager's Whare ABOUT FORAGING MAP FORAGING ETTIQUETE PLANT INFO CONTACT PLANT INFORMATION Identifying plants is absolutely a skill, and one that you get better at with practice. Fruit trees are fairly easy to spot and identify, especially during the spring and summer months. Wild herbs are a little harder, and fungi is harder again. We recommend to go with an experienced forager if you are not confident in your identification. There are often also workshops, both paid and free, that you can attend to help your knowledge. We recommend following Ōtautahi Urban Foraging on Facebook, and we also often share knowledge on our Facebook page too so be sure to follow these if you are learning the lost art of foraging. In the Forager's Whare area at 399 New Brighton Road we will try and label trees, herbs and shrubs as much as we can, to aid in learning how to identify useful edible and medicinal plants.

It is considered a must-have for the cider producer. It produces a slow-fermenting, full-bodied, quality 'hard' cider. Kingston Black fruit are small sized, dark and maroon in colour with a 'bittersharp' and tart flavour. It should not be considered a good apple for eating, cooking or juicing - and only useful for the production of hard cider. It is a heavy cropper but can be biannual bearing. Although partially self-fertile, you will get better cropping if planted with another MID flowering variety, or Royal Gala or Golden Delicious. It is somewhat prone to disease, so will need care, and likely some kind of spray regime.
