  • PEACH | Fruitfool

Peach - Prunus Persica Go to the Peach Varieties The peach (Prunus persica) is a deciduous tree, originating in the Northwest China where it was first domesticated and cultivated. name persica refers to its cultivation in Persia (now modern-day Iran) from where it was first introduced to Europe. Peaches generally need decent chilling hours, so those in cooler climates will be pleased to find that excellent peaches can be eked out of a hard old back paddock with a little feeding, and protection from animals and wind. In the colonial days of New Zealand peaches were one of the first orchard trees in New Zealand. The old varieties like Black Boy and Golden Queen grow true to seed, and it was easy for local farmers to grow their stock. Peaches were grown throughout New Zealand to varying success, but they tended to thrive in climates where there was ample rain but dry, hot summers and very cold frosts in Winter, but not during spring bloom - such as Otago, much like the Peach's origins in Central Asia and Iran. Most varieties do require decent chilling hours, so if you are in a warmer area of New Zealand be careful when choosing your varieties. Peaches are self-fertile, and left alone will grow into a fairly large tree, up to 4m tall, but can be pruned smaller, prefering either a vase form or fan shape. They do need good shelter. Because some varieties are difficult to get hold of, both because of popularity and short supply, it is recommended to plan a year ahead and order the varieties you want. For warmer climates, Golden Grace is a winner, and for those who get autumn storms, the earlier fruiting Golden Haze is great. If your trees are prone to leaf curl, April-White is a great choice. Peach trees need heavy feeding, don't be stingy when it comes to adding manure and mulch. DId you know that China produces around 60% of the world total of peaches and nectarines. • PEAR | Fruitfool

Pear - Pyrus Communis / Pyrifolia Go to the Pear varieties Pears can be divided into two main groups - the Nashi Pear (Pyrifolia) and European Pear (Pyrus Communis). They grow medium - large and are native to coastal and mild temperate regions in Europe, North Africa, and Asia. Pear wood is one of the preferred materials in the manufacture of high-quality woodwind instruments and furniture . There are about 3000 named varieties of pears grown worldwide, which vary in many characteristics including shape, colour, and taste. Pear fruit is consumed fresh, canned, as juice , or dried and some varieties are suited for long keeping. Pears tend to be quite adaptable and grow and crop well in all regions of New Zealand. They are cold hardy deciduous trees that can tolerate harsh winters and warm summers. They provide snow-white blossom in spring, lovely shade in summer and spectacular autumn foliage. Like most fruit trees, pears detest constant wet feet in winter, so do best in free draining fertile-soil is best, although they can tolerate somewhat heavier and sandy soils. They require at least 5 hours per day, but will do best in a good sunny spot for good fruiting and less problems with diseases and pests. Pear trees naturally grow with very upright, columnar branches. For best fruit production and easy picking, branches can be trained horizontally, similar to espalier, while still young and supple. The pliable branches can be tied or weighed down until they stay in position. Horizontal branches produce more fruiting spurs than upright growth, and sap flows slower, lessening the overall vigour of the tree and limiting its height. A central leader form is the most suitable shape for pears to maintain a main trunk of branches usually starting about 1m from the ground, then tiers every 60-80cm up the trunk. Any growth between the tiers (apart from fruiting spurs) should be removed from the trunk. Pears are well suited to expalier, especially in a small garden. There is only one true dwarf variety of pear - Garden Belle® from Waimea Nurseries. Interestingly, quince rootstocks are often used to grow pear trees, providing a dwarfing influence and speedier fruit production. Rootstocks named BA29 and Quince C are the most commonly used here. Some pear varieties (such as 'Beurré Bosc', 'Winter Nelis' and 'Williams' Bon Crétien') are not compatible with quince rootstocks, so an interstem or interstock is grafted between the rootstock and the pear variety. This allows the incompatible pear variety to have the dwarfing influence of the quince rootstock, as the alternative pear seedling rootstocks produce very large tree that take longer to produce a crop. Pears are unusual as their fruit is better when harvested whilst hard, then chilled and ripened at room temperature. They are ready to pick when the fruit detaches from the tree when lifted to horizontal and gently tugged, apart from 'Beurre Bosc', which can be harder to pick. Fruit should be refrigerated for around four to six weeks, before bringing up to room temperature for a few days to ripen. The old heritage varieties from the 19th century are still just as popular for home gardens (and commercial growing) as these are often hard to be beaten on flavour, productivity and storage. Pears tend to be less susceptible to harsh spring frosts with a later flowering time. Almost all need cross-pollination as they are not self-fertile. Be careful to choose varieties that will cross-pollinate well. Searching the site There are a couple of ways to search the site we've listed their pros and cons (or limitatations) below. WIDEST SEARCH: Use the Selector Tools: Fruit, Nuts , or Berries & Vines. , These tools allow you to filter on Harvest Months for instance, and may help you give you inspiration for things that are fruit bearing in say 'June' where you have a gap in your harvest. You can also filter on 'Climate' (see more on climate ) to see what will work best for your area. The table has some basic infomration to help you quickly narrow down, for instance whether the tree is self-fertile or whether it produces fruit that is known to be good for preserving/baking etc. The best part about these tools is that they can help you compare between different fruit types, but sometimes the group can be so broad that you'll have hundreds to look through and the filtering may not be enough so that you have hundreds of rows of fruit to look through. NARROWED SEARCH: Use the tables and filtering on the 'Fruit type' specific pages i.e. Apple , Lemon , Feijoa or Blueberry for instance to get a narrowed search, as you are only looking at one fruit type at a time. There is some additional filtering here of 'General Availability', Which means you can search for 'Common' if you expect to be able to find it at most local gardening stores or, alternatively set it to 'Rare' if you're a bit of a collector and on the hunt for a more unusual species to round out your garden. The limitation with this search is of course that you can't compare between different fruit types i.e. compare a Mandarin with an Orange, where you may wish to compare their harvest times for instance. SITEWIDE SEARCH: Use the sitewide Search functionality magnifying icon at the top right of all pages on the site to perform a sitewide search. This will bring up all results, both from the fruit pages but also any other pages of relevance. If you are looking for a specific variety to see if we have got it on the site, or are very specific on what information you're looking for it may be a good way to search, but may not be the easiest way if you're just in a browsing mood. Using the Wishlist SAVE VARIETIES YOU ARE THINKING OF PURCHASING: Part of the inpiration in creating this site, was because we kept forgetting the varieties that we were considering for our garden. YOu go to a lot of effort to find out good information, either from the web, a book or from your local nursery only to forget 3 months down the track when you go to buy it what the darn variety was you were looking at. Even more confusing if you were weighing up getting a pollinator etc and then if you're looking at buying multiple trees of different types, from multiple places.... and what if you wrote it all down diligently at home and then happen upon a sale at your local nursery and need to make a quick decision.... much handier to have that all saved in your profile here at Fruitfool for easy reference where you can always access it quickly on your phone. SAVE VARIETIES YOU"VE ALREADY GOT: Now, that our garden is filling up, I've used the Wishlist to also record what varieties I already have in our garden - it makes it really easy now to look at when my harvest times are, when I'll have gaps and helps to inform my future decisions. We're hoping to add more functionality as we go to the Wishlist. The Wishlist is free to use, it's only for your use and the information does not get used elsewhere (with the exception that from time to time we may look at what the 'most popular apple' is in wishlists across all users etc. You do need to become a member of the site, and will need to create a login, but we will never share or sell your information or email address with any 3rd party (with the exception of conforming to any applicable New Zealand laws).
