Spartan originated in Canada in 1926. With maroon skin and a blue bloom (like a grape), it is crisp, juicy and has white flesh with slight grape flavour. It has its best flavour when picked late or after a frost. It is a McIntosh crossed with a Yellow Newtown Pippin.
