Freiherr von Berlepsch is a small to medium-sized, round, apple with a red blush. A sweet and juicy apple with spicy pineapple flavour. This apple is well known for its very high amount of vitamin C. It is a dual-purpose apple, great for fresh eating, but can also be used for cooking and cider. Flavour is best after one month in cold storage, but should keep well for up to 4 months.
Spur bearing and moderately vigorous, this is a moderately productive variety. It can be sensitive to late frosts and susceptible to canker and fireblight.
This cultivar was originally created in Rhineland (Germany) in the 1880s, by Dietrich Uhlhorn Jr. of Grevenbroich and was cross bred from Ribston Pippin and Ananas Reinette.
