Bergamot orange is a very fragrant citrus, producing fruit the size of an orange, with a yellow or green colour, similar to a lime, depending on ripeness. Plant in the sun in fertile well drained soil for best results. Will need protection from harsh frosts. Although fairly vigorous they can be kept well pruned. The fruit is a cross of a Seville orange and pear lemon, it is less sour than lemon but more bitter than grapefruit and is therefore considered not edible. It is mostly grown for for its essential oil, which is contained in the peel. The peel is also what is used to flavour black tea - known as Earl Grey.
