Monty's Surprise was discovered in the 1990's, an old tree that was found in the Manawatu. from an old apple tree found in the 1990's. It has large to extremely large apples that are crisp, juicy and tart to sweet/tart. It is square-ish in shape, with red stripes on pale green. A versatile apple it can be used for cooking, juicing, cider making or fresh eating when it is tree ripened. The tree is a hardy and disease resistant variety. The Monty's Surprise fruit has been studied by NZ Tree Crops Association (Mark Christensen) and has been found to be extremely high in health-boosting antioxidants.
